You are standing in the bulb aisle with two boxes in hand: 3,000 K on one side, 4,000 K on the other. The gap looks trivial on the packaging; it is spectacular once the lamp is switched on. One extends the evening, the other turns your living room into a waiting room. Here is how to choose, room by room, and above all the rule that matters more than the value itself.

The answer for a living room

3,000 K. Without hesitation. The living room is a place for unwinding, for conversation, for the end of the day: it calls for warm light, the kind that flatters materials and faces.

4,000 K does exactly the opposite. It is a neutral, slightly blue-leaning white, designed for spaces where you need to see precisely — a desk, a workshop, a bathroom mirror. In a living room the eye reads it as public-building light. The room feels colder, the wood greyer, the textiles flatter.

The one exception: a work corner set up inside the living room. There, a 4,000 K lamp aimed at the desk is justified, provided it goes off when the working day ends.

The Kelvin scale at a glance

Kelvin measures neither power nor quantity of light: only its tone. Counter-intuitively, the lower the number, the warmer and more orange the light. The higher it climbs, the more it leans towards blue-white.

Between 3,000 K and 4,000 K the perceived gap is far wider than between 2,700 K and 3,000 K. It is precisely the border between "home light" and "work light".

The logic is constant: 3,000 K to live, 4,000 K to do. Anywhere you relax, stay warm. Anywhere precision is needed — chopping vegetables, shaving, reading a file — go up to 4,000 K, but over a limited zone.

The mistake that ruins it all: mixing

The most important rule in this article is not which value you pick, it is consistency. Two temperatures visible at once in the same field of view, and the room looks badly set up, however good the fittings.

The classic case: a ceiling light swapped for 4,000 K, with accent lamps still at 2,700 K. The eye moves between them and registers an imbalance, often without being able to explain it. The fix is simple: take stock of every bulb in a given room and align them. One temperature per visible zone. If you want variation, work with intensity, not tone.

The number nobody looks at: CRI

Alongside kelvins, look for CRI — the colour rendering index, sometimes written Ra. It says how faithfully the lamp reproduces colours, on a scale up to 100.

Allow 80 as a minimum for a living space, and aim for 90 or above if your decorating rests on coloured materials: rugs, wood, textiles, artwork. Below 80, a beautiful living room looks dull without anyone understanding why — the lamp lights the space but impoverishes its colours. A 3,000 K bulb with CRI 90 will always render better than a cheap 3,000 K one.
