There's something deeply soothing about a well-lit terrace at nightfall. The soft shadows dancing on the walls, the warm light enveloping the dinner table, that feeling of being both outside and at home. Yet outdoor lighting remains the poor relation of decorative lighting: often reduced to a security spotlight or a forgotten Christmas garland.
In 2026, rechargeable lamps have changed the game. No more buried cables or waterproof sockets. A portable lamp, a summer evening, and your terrace becomes the most beautiful living room in the neighbourhood. Here's how to achieve it.
Why you should care about your terrace lighting
Outdoors is an extension of your interior. In France, a well-designed terrace or balcony can be used for 6 to 8 months a year depending on the region. Yet as soon as night falls, many abandon this space for lack of suitable lighting.
Good outdoor lighting fulfils four functions:
- Safety — seeing where you walk, spotting steps, deterring intruders
- Functionality — being able to dine, read or cook on the barbecue after sunset
- Ambience — transforming an ordinary space into a magical place
- Value — a lit outdoor space increases the perceived value of a property by 10 to 15%
Outdoor light should never mimic indoor light. Outside, we seek mystery, contrasts, plays of shadow. Not the homogeneous clarity of an office.
The different types of outdoor lighting
Portable rechargeable lamps
This is the revolution of recent years. Wireless rechargeable lamps offer total freedom: place them on the table, on a low wall, take them into the garden. No installation, no cables, 8 to 20 hours of battery life depending on the model.
The best portable outdoor lamps are certified IP54 minimum: they resist water splashes and dust. You charge them via USB-C, and some even offer touch-sensitive dimming to adjust the ambience with a simple gesture.
Bollards and markers
Staked into the ground along paths or around the terrace, bollards mark pathways and create a soft luminous perimeter. Ideal height: 40 to 60 cm to light without dazzling. They are perfect as a complement to table lighting.
Recessed spotlights
Integrated into the ground, walls or staircase steps, recessed spotlights offer spectacular architectural lighting. They highlight textures (stone, wood) and define volumes. Disadvantage: permanent installation requiring an electrician.
Light garlands
Strung between two points, garlands create an enchanting ceiling of light. In 2026, LED models consume very little and last for years. Choose warm white bulbs (2200-2700K) for a warm rendering, never cool white which gives a building-site look.
Exterior wall lights
Fixed to the façade, they light upward and/or downward. Perfect next to a door or along a terrace wall. They structure the space and add an architectural dimension.

Understanding IP ratings: the key to outdoor lighting
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is the most important criterion for an outdoor light fixture. Made up of two digits, it indicates the level of protection against solids (dust) and liquids (water).
The first digit: protection against solids
- 0 — no protection
- 5 — protected against dust (limited ingress)
- 6 — fully dust-tight
The second digit: protection against water
- 4 — resistant to splashing water (spray, light rain)
- 5 — resistant to water jets (heavy rain, jet cleaning)
- 6 — resistant to powerful jets
- 7 — temporary immersion (30 min at 1 m)
Which IP for which use?
- IP44 — covered terrace, veranda, sheltered balcony
- IP54 — open terrace, garden, poolside
- IP65 — ground spotlights, exposed environment
- IP67 — pool lighting, fountains
Our advice: for an outdoor table lamp, aim for IP44 minimum (covered terrace) or IP54 (open terrace). This protects you against a sudden shower without sacrificing design.
Creating the perfect ambience for the occasion
The tête-à-tête dinner
Intimacy and softness. Place a single rechargeable lamp at the centre of the table, set to medium intensity. The light should illuminate faces and plates without creating awkward dark areas. Ideal temperature: 2700K (very warm white, candle effect).
Complete with LED candles or a garland in the background. The secret: multiplying low-intensity sources rather than a single strong source.
Drinks with friends
A convivial, relaxed ambience. Use 2 to 3 portable lamps spread across the table and surrounding surfaces (low wall, sideboard, staircase). Medium intensity, enough for everyone to see their glass without feeling exposed as if on stage.
The large gathering / festive meal
More light, more energy. Combine a garland above the table (at 2.50 m height) with several portable lamps along the table. Add bollards around the terrace to define the space. The goal: no one should eat in shadow.
The relaxed evening / reading
A single lamp next to your armchair or lounger, set to low intensity. The rest of the terrace can remain in half-light. It's the moment when silence and soft light suffice.

Adapting your outdoor lighting to the seasons
Spring and summer
This is the queen season of outdoor lighting. Evenings are long, night falls late. Favour soft ambient lights that take over from the sunset. Very warm white (2200-2700K) reproduces the golden light of the golden hour.
Tip: in summer, light attracts insects. Choose warm white bulbs (cool LEDs attract more) and place your lamps slightly set back from the dining area.
Autumn
Evenings shorten, the air cools. It's the ideal moment for early-lit dinners, around 7pm. The portable lamp becomes a companion to blankets and herbal tea on the terrace. Check the IP rating of your lamps: autumn brings damp and rain.
Winter
Don't pack everything away! A lit terrace in winter, even briefly used, creates a magnificent picture viewed from inside. Place one or two lamps behind the living room window. In winter, rechargeable is ideal because you don't leave lamps outside permanently.

Maintenance tips for your outdoor lamps
Even with a good IP rating, a few precautions extend the lifespan of your lamps:
- Clean regularly — A damp cloth is enough. Pollen, dust and barbecue residue accumulate and can dull materials.
- Bring them in during storms — IP54 protects against rain, not hail. In case of a storm, shelter your lamps.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight — UV can yellow some plastics. When the lamp isn't in use, store it in the shade.
- Charge before the cold — Li-ion batteries don't like the cold. In winter, store your lamps charged to 50% in a temperate place.

Frequently asked questions about outdoor lighting
Which IP rating for a terrace lamp?
For a covered terrace, IP44 minimum is enough (splash protection). For an open terrace exposed to rain, opt for IP54 which resists water splashes from all directions. For poolside, IP65 is recommended.
Solar or rechargeable: which to choose?
Solar is self-sufficient but depends on sunlight and often offers low brightness. USB-C rechargeable is more powerful, more reliable and offers better colour rendering. For quality ambient lighting, rechargeable wins clearly.
How many lumens to light a terrace?
For a pleasant ambience, count on 100 to 200 lumens per table lamp. A 15 m² terrace requires roughly 2 to 3 light sources. The goal isn't to light like broad daylight, but to create comfortable islands of light.
Do LED lamps attract mosquitoes?
Insects are attracted to lights rich in UV and blue (cool white, above 5000K). Warm white LEDs (2700K) attract far fewer insects than incandescent bulbs or cool LEDs. Always favour warm white outdoors.
Your terrace deserves its light
Outdoor lighting is an investment in your quality of life. A few well-chosen, well-placed lamps transform a simple terrace into an enchanting nocturnal living space. The key: multiple sources, ever-present warm white, and lamps you can move according to your mood.
