How Many Lumens for a Dining Room? Chart by Table Size

How many lumens to properly light a dining room? Chart by table size, pendant height, colour temperature, mistakes to avoid.

The dining room has a unique lighting setup: everything revolves around a single object, the table. Unlike the kitchen or the office where light must sweep the whole room, here the pendant above the table does 70% of the work. The rest — perimeter lighting, wall light, accent lamp — exists to prevent the "lit table in the dark" effect.

This guide gives you the right number of lumens for a dining room, the exact pendant height based on your table type, and the temperature that turns a dinner into a genuine cosy moment.

The basic rule: lumens per m²

A dining room needs 200 to 300 lumens per square metre, but the more meaningful unit here is the lumen per guest. Allow 500 to 800 lumens per person seated at the table.

For a 6-person table, that's 3 000 to 4 800 cumulative lumens on the table zone — not scattered across the room. That's mistake #1: thinking you have to light the room. No, you light the table.

The pendant: centrepiece

The pendant above the table represents 60 to 70% of total lighting in the dining room. It creates the atmosphere, defines the aesthetic, lights the faces of guests. Three critical criteria.

1. Installation height

The absolute rule: 75 to 90 cm above the table. Lower, guests opposite see the bulb. Higher, the light scatters and stops lighting the table properly. For full rules, see our ideal pendant heights guide.

2. Shade width

The shade should be 50 to 70% of the table width. A 90-cm-wide table calls for a 45-65 cm shade. Too small, light concentrates in the centre. Too large, it visually crushes the table.

3. Number of pendants

For a table up to 1.40 m long: 1 pendant. From 1.50 to 2.20 m: 2 pendants. Beyond 2.30 m: 3 pendants. Aligned and evenly spaced.

Lighting a dining room well means lighting the table, not the room.

Colour temperature for dinners

The dining room is the room where colour temperature matters most. Too cool (4 000 K and above), your dinner looks like a canteen. Too warm (1 800 K), food looks yellowish and unappetising.

The rule: 2 700 to 3 000 K for the main pendant. The temperature that makes faces warm and dishes appetising, without veering into "downmarket bistro". Our colour temperature guide covers it all.

The must-have: a dimmable pendant. You drop to 60% for an intimate dinner for two, climb to 100% for a family dinner for 8. Same room, two completely different atmospheres.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pendant too high — Above 90 cm from the table, you lose the focused light on the dining zone. Measure precisely.
  • Pendant too wide vs the table — An 80-cm-diameter pendant over a 1.20 m table looks crushing. Respect the 50-70% proportion.
  • Too-white light — Above 3 500 K, the dinner atmosphere disappears. Your dining room should be at 2 700-3 000 K, not more.
  • No perimeter lighting — If only the table is lit, the rest of the room turns dark and oppressive. Add a wall light or accent lamp to break the contrast.

Frequently asked questions about dining-room lumens

How many lumens for a 6-person table?

Aim for 3 800 total lumens on the table zone, ideally split across 2 pendants of 1 900 lumens each. Plus 300-500 lumens of perimeter lighting (wall light or accent lamp).

What height for the pendant?

75 to 90 cm above the table. For a standard-height dining table (75 cm off the floor), your pendant sits at 150-165 cm from the floor. Lower, you bother guests; higher, you lose the focused-light effect.

How many pendants for a large table?

Up to 1.40 m: 1 pendant. From 1.50 to 2.20 m: 2 pendants. Beyond 2.30 m: 3 pendants, aligned and evenly spaced. For the full rules, see our pendant heights guide.

What temperature for dinners?

2 700 to 3 000 K. The temperature that makes food appetising and faces warm. Above 3 500 K, the atmosphere disappears and the room looks like a canteen.

Do I need lighting beyond the pendant?

Yes. Without perimeter lighting, the contrast between lit table and dark room creates an oppressive feel. Add a wall light or accent lamp in a corner, 300-500 lumens, to soften that contrast.

Lighting your dining room properly in 2026

A successful dining room comes down to three elements: the right pendant, at the right height (75-90 cm from the table), in 2 700-3 000 K dimmable. Everything else — wall light, accent lamp — is complement that avoids the "table in the dark" effect.

If you're equipping a new dining room, invest first in a quality pendant. That's what will define the atmosphere of all your meals for the next 10 years.

The Lumora team's take

Our favourite dining-room setup: for a 1.80 m rectangular table, two Sevora pendants in amber glass (3 800 cumulative dimmable lumens, 2 700 K), installed 80 cm above the table. In addition, an Asiora wall light above the sideboard (400 lumens) to break the contrast. In the evening, drop to 60% for a romantic dinner, climb to 100% for family dinners. One installation, ten atmospheres.
